Living wills

State your care wishes with a living will

Make your care wishes known in case you lose the ability to make decisions

A 'living will' is very different from the type of will that you may be familiar with. A living will is used to advise your friends, family and medical professionals caring for you of your wishes about your healthcare if you become seriously ill and lose the capacity to make decisions or communicate.

It refers to either an 'advance statement' or an 'advance decision'.

An advance statement lets you state your preference for the type of care you want if you become unable to make decisions or communicate your wishes. An advance decision (also called an advance directive) allows you to decide which types of treatment you do not want to receive.
